World War Z: Aftermath, the co-op zombie shooter inspired by the film, which was vaguely inspired by the collection of short stories by Max Brooks (well they have the same name at least) is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on January 24.
Owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions can get down with the sickness (whahaha) with a free upgrade that will let them continue to play the game, but now in glorious 4k at 60fps on their shiny new consoles.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X ports of World War Z: Aftermath will also include a new way to play the game – Horde Mode XL. This new addition to the game follows the same template as the game’s standard Horde Mode, where you need to mow down hordes of zombies (get it) but with a GPU groaning twist; amongst the normal waves of enemies is an XL wave containing more than 1,000 ravenous brain-munchers.
Can you have too many zombies to kill?
Sounds like an exciting proposition. What’s going to overheat first, is it the machine gun your avatar is using in a desperate struggle to keep all these buggers at bay or your GPU?
Just wait for the sounds of a jet taking off coming from your gaming device of choice to find out when this mode is active.
I am of course joking. But as someone who thinks that enemy encounters are a delicate balance, and hates bigger mobs for the sake of mobs. This doesn’t sound like my cup of tea. Or a cranium full of delicious squishy brains.
XL Mode is headed to PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. But will not be coming to the Nintendo Switch for obvious reasons, which I have made clear, just replace fans kicking in at full speed with, the console spontaneously combusting and you’ve got the gist.
The Switch version of World War Z is also missing out on new mutators that will be added to the standard horde mode, as well as new weapons and tweaks to the weapon progress system, that will be added to all other versions of the game including PS4 and Xbox One as part of the January 24 update.
World War Z: Aftermath includes two new episodes set in Rome, which includes parts of Vatican City (yay sacrilege) as well as Russias Kamchatka peninsula, a new first-person mode, a revamped melee combat system, as well as all the content from the Game of the Year Edition of the game. Did we mention you can fight 1,000 zombies at once in the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X versions too? That’s a lot of skulls to crack.
World War z: Aftermath will be available for PS5 and Xbox Series S|X on January 24. Existing owners of the game on PS4 and Xbox One will be able to grab the new version for free in the usual way.
