Long Live the Queen is a visual novel RPG where the player controls the destiny of a young princess about to become queen.

Fourteen year old Elodie’s mother; the Queen of Nova has recently died forcing Elodie to return home in preparation for her own coronation. The objective of the game is to see Elodie survive to her fifteenth birthday, forty weeks after the game begins. The game develops week by week, each week you plot out Elodie’s activities which raise her stats, affect her mood and influences the direction of the narrative. The completion of certain activities and events depends on the combination of stats that you raise, which again affects the storyline or more importantly, your chance of survival as the options for dying prematurely is high.

It is difficult to determine what stats will help you where. On one occasion I thought, 'I need political knowledge to outwit this evil prince.' Turns out: his weak point was flower arranging. Bugger.

It is an unusual game that requires far more thought than one might think from looking at the screenshots. There are four categories containing fourteen skillsets each with three subcategories of which you can study two a week. However your ability to study individual skills is dependent upon your mood which can also be affected by your weekly choice of leisure activity. Events are sparked (or not sparked) by how many points you have in a relevant skill or a combination of skills. While this might sound complicated, it is very easy to pick up. It is, however surprisingly complex for a game that looks like it is little more than a pretty princess dressing up. (Your skills can also be affected by your choice of costumes, which are unlocked by your development of skills-just to add some more layers).

I really enjoy this game, though I will admit sometimes the skills required have to be raised in a very specific manner, so much so that without a guide it is extremely difficult to know how to do so, yet some of the early events require such high stats that without a step by step guide it’s almost impossible to raise them alone. These are issues that only affected me majorly on my third or fourth play-through when I was trying to attain certain endings or provoke certain events. Otherwise I had great fun with the sheer amount of options available to me. Initially I was the perfect lady, followed by a brutal military commander, then a murderous witch, a kindly nurse and on my last play-through I was an evil spymaster. Yet there are still multiple options for me to explore and even though I have played the game to death, I am still looking forward to it!
